Galician-born physicist Isidor Isaac Rabi was born. He discovered the phenomenon of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) while researching molecular beams in 1938. Eight years later, Felix Bloch and Edward Purcell used Rabi’s work to invent the NMR spectrometer, a highly useful tool for analysing molecules.
